How Kim Ji-won Became an Actress Audiences Trust: From Debut to Doctor X

Which Kim Ji-won comes to mind first? The cool and proud Rachel Yoo in The Heirs, or Yeom Mi-jeong, quietly longing for liberation? Both were played by the same actress, yet they leave very different impressions. In 2026, she returned as brilliant surgeon Gye Su-jeong and found herself in the spotlight again. Today, the jumak hostess looks beyond a single hit to trace the roles and years that shaped her career.

From a commercial newcomer to Rachel Yoo

Born on October 19, 1992, Kim Ji-won made her official debut, according to her agency HighZium Studio, in a 2010 Lollipop commercial. After drawing attention through advertising, she reached drama audiences in the 2011 sitcom High Kick! Revenge of the Short Legged. In The Heirs (2013), she played Rachel Yoo, a seemingly confident and aloof student. But beneath her composure, she revealed the character's loneliness and vulnerability, making Rachel more than simply an unpleasant rival.

Yoon Myung-joo and Choi Ae-ra: two voices of youth

In Descendants of the Sun (2016), Kim played Yoon Myung-joo, a forthright and decisive military doctor. The following year, in Fight for My Way, she became Choi Ae-ra, a young woman struggling through everyday reality while dreaming of becoming an announcer. One wears a uniform and makes firm decisions; the other laughs and cries amid ordinary life. Kim broadened her range by giving each a different speaking rhythm and emotional energy.

She later moved between fantasy and contemporary romance as Tanya in Arthdal Chronicles (2019) and Lee Eun-o in Lovestruck in the City (2020). Rather than repeating one kind of heroine, she found a new rhythm for each story.

From quiet Yeom Mi-jeong to resilient Hong Hae-in

In My Liberation Notes (2022), she portrayed Yeom Mi-jeong, a reserved youngest daughter yearning to break free from her everyday life. Instead of relying on dramatic events, she conveyed emotion through small expressions and silence. In Queen of Tears (2024), she played Hong Hae-in of the Queens Group: outwardly cool and assured, yet shaken by relationships and loss beneath the surface.

According to Nielsen Korea, the final episode of Queen of Tears, aired on April 28, 2024, achieved a 24.85% rating. At the time, it set a new ratings record for tvN dramas. But numbers alone cannot explain Kim's appeal. Rachel, Ae-ra, Mi-jeong, and Hae-in remain memorable because each embodies a different kind of life.

2026: another turn as surgeon Gye Su-jeong

In SBS's Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia, which premiered on October 9, 2026, Kim plays Gye Su-jeong, a brilliant surgeon who confronts corruption in the medical world. Unlike her characters in romantic comedies, this role belongs to a story shaped by difficult decisions and professional responsibility. It offers another answer to the question: what kind of person will she portray next?

In Good Data Corporation's FUNdex TV-and-streaming drama actor buzz ranking for the fourth week of October (October 19–25), announced on October 27, Kim held first place for the third consecutive week. Reports also placed the October 24 sixth episode of Doctor X at a nationwide household rating of 19.5%, according to Nielsen Korea. Audience ratings measure a program's viewership; actor buzz rankings reflect attention paid to performers.

Where should you start watching Kim Ji-won?

For a lively story about young adulthood, start with Fight for My Way. For understated emotions, try My Liberation Notes; for a dramatic romance, Queen of Tears is a good entry point. Doctor X offers a look at her fiercer current character. Watching The Heirs afterward may make the changes in her acting over the years even more striking.

For nearly sixteen years, Kim Ji-won has resisted being defined by a single hit character. With each project came a new occupation, personality, way of speaking, and emotional world. That is why she is the first person featured in Jumak's K-People series. Which of her characters has stayed with you the longest?
